Water Damage and How to Prevent Secondary Damage

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

It's Monday morning, you're just waking up thinking about making coffee and something to eat to start your day. You wash your face and complete your morning routine and head down the stairs. You reach the bottom steps and its raining indoors in your kitchen. Don't freak out, as hard as this is keeping it together is essential. Go find the water shut off and disconnect any further water from flowing. Next start moving any contents you want to try to save. After that you're gonna want to call your insurance company and put in a claim. Pick a plumber to come out and take care of where the water was coming from. Once the cause of loss has been fixed you're going to want to give us a call so we can remove all the wet materials and start the drying process. Once drying is started you're on the way back to having a normal home. Our SERVPRO is currently mitigation only so finding a contractor is the next step to making it "Like it never even happened."

10/29/2021 (Permalink)

Many people have never been through a water damage before so lets run through the process! You have a water damage a pipe has a leak and water is everywhere! First you are going to want to turn the source off. Find your water shut off and turn it off. Call your insurance company and a plumber to fix the problem. Then your insurance company will tell you to call a water restoration company like us! We will come in after the source is fixed and remove all wet materials and standing water! In doing this we are getting access to other affected materials like wood beams in the wall or the subfloor! Once everything is to a safe level we pull our equipment and your home is ready to be rebuilt!

Flowing, Flooding, Falling

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

Water comes in many forms. Specifically there are three categories of water. Category one being Sanitary. Category two being somewhat contaminated. Category three being severely contaminated. We encounter these on a daily basis and they sometimes change how mitigation is handled. As the category increases more intense cleaning and sanitizing is needed. A sanitary source of water would be a supply line for a sink or an air conditioner leak. A severely contaminated source of water would be a sewer line or a drain line. Either way any category of water needs to be properly cleaned up or you can have issues such as microbial growth in your home which becomes a risk for your whole family. So do not wait! Make the calls! We're here to help!

Brandywine Flooding Early September

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

Our crews have been tirelessly working helping as many people affected by the flooding from the storm two weeks ago. We have seen all sorts of water damages from this between major flooding to minimal water damage. No matter the size of the job or the severity of the damage we are ready and able to help.

This storm pushed the Brandywine River to the highest it has been in the past few years. Causing more damage than ever before to Pennsylvania as well as Delaware. While it's typical stream does tend to run pretty high during a light storm this was something else all together. For a lot of people this was their first flood situation and they were not too prepared. Some were even woken up by fire fighters in their homes and evacuated due to how high the river got and the water penetrating into their homes first floors and basements.

It is national preparedness month so lets do what we can to prepare for these natural disasters and protect our homes and valuable memories.

Top Tips For Your Basement!

1/28/2021 (Permalink)

No one wants to wake up to water in their basement much less the damage that comes with it. So here are some tips to help reduce the damage! Personally I like storage space and containers to be neat and organized. Investing in plastic tubs rather than cardboard boxes is one easy way to immediately reduce any damage coming from water! Cardboard will absorb the water and penetrate to the contents inside! You won't have this issue with plastic tubs (depending on the water level)! Another tip is invest in shelving. If things are up off the ground they are less likely to be affected by the water. Next, be conscious of the humidity levels overall in your basement! Investing in a dehumidifier for the space could be useful for the space in general. Going back to organization label your plastic tubs so you know what's where! Do not keep important paperwork or memories in the basement. Just incase a catastrophe occurs you're going to want anything important to you far away from it. We are here to help and want you to be the most prepared with the process and try to make things go as smooth as possible for you. We always recommend if you have any questions or concerns to reach out to us directly and we will handle it swiftly and with precision.

It's A New Year!

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

Ah, it's the beginning of a new year. As always this brings its challenges. We are in winter which means cold weather and frozen pipes! There is no time like right now to be checking your home overall!

When did you change your air filters last? Have you checked your crawlspace since the most recent rain and snow we've received? Is there adequate heat in your basement? Are your pipes insulated? All good questions to ask yourself this time of year. You never know what you will find when it comes to water damage.

Also do you have previous water damage causing secondary damage on your home such as visible mold growth? This is damaging not only to your property but can cause health effects also!

Make one of your new year's resolutions to be paying more attention to the little household things that are tedious but oh so necessary. Happy New Year from all of us here at SERVPRO of Salem County!

Its Property Check Season!

9/30/2020 (Permalink)

As things are getting more brisk out it's time to start checking your pipes more often! A tiny leak can be fixed easily! If you ignore a tiny leak it could become a bigger project that may not be in your budget! Avoid water damages at all costs if you can! Checking the pipes under sinks and in basements regularly will keep you on top of any issues that may arise. If you do find a small leak call a plumber sooner than later and place a fan where the leak was found for a few days to make sure its really dry under there! If its more than a small leak give us a call and we will do everything we can do to help you. Also now may be a good time to check and see if your pipes are insulated before the winter. Nothing is worse than a frozen pipe!

Flooding Tips!

9/18/2020 (Permalink)

Today we are sharing some tips on what to do and not to do if you experience flood waters in your home! First do NOT use your household vacuum to try and suck up water! If you have a shop vac laying around we recommend trying that. Second, If you know your ceiling is wet do not turn on any ceiling fixtures! Third don't leave wet wet fabrics hanging! Hang your furs and leathers! Now that we've shared some things not to do, here are some good things that will help the process. If you can, turn on your air conditioning for maximum drying in the summer! Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting! Remove artwork from walls and move to a safe dry area! Store any contents in your basement in plastic tubs with lids! Plastic will withstand water much better than cardboard which will disintegrate! Removing as much wet content from the flooded area will also help speed up the process. Hopefully these tips help you if you're ever in a flood situation.

Power is Out and Sump Pump is Failing

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

Oh no! The power went out and the rain is coming down hard. Your sump pump fails and water starts flooding through your basement and you begin to panic. The first thing we recommend is to get down there (we know you don't want to but it will help in the long run) and begin to move any contents you have on the ground either up to a higher elevation or into a different area of your home. This makes pumping out the water easier and allows for the drying process to be more smooth. Pro Tips and things to be aware of! Store things in plastic tubs rather than cardboard boxes! Plastic can at least withstand water while cardboard disintegrates. The next best thing to do is mentally prepare that some things will be ruined by the water and while heartbreaking removing wet contents is easier than needing a full mold mitigation completed. This process can take time. We do provide a sanitizer that is sprayed after all the water is removed in efforts to squash any mold growth that may have started. Depending on the level the water gets to there may be other factors to keep in mind. Pulling off baseboard is very common as well as cutting out wet drywall. Flooring is another big factor of these jobs. We recommend sealed tile for basements and here is why. If you put carpet the whole affected area of the carpet and pad will most likely be removed. Hardwood and Vinyl are just the same that they will be lifted and removed. Water usually does not penetrate sealed tile and can get sucked up and dried with ease! It is a win, win for all parties involved! Hopefully some of these tips were helpful involving what to expect if this happens to you.

Did the pipe burst?

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Water Damage is the second most reported insurance claim. With everything from broken pipes to sump pump failures we've seen it all! When water is spraying in every direction most people just try and cover the leak because it is the first reaction! Instead of spraying yourself with water and being soaked, run to your water supply and just turn it right off! Next give us a call, day or night, at any time! We'll come out and take care of that water and dry it right up. Waking up to water anywhere it's not supposed to be can be really overwhelming but trust the professionals that are not only certified in taking care of these situations, but care about making your home or business "Like it never even happened."

Tip Tuesday – Termite Prevention

10/14/2019 (Permalink)

Finally, the time has come for cool evenings by the fire. Whether you have an inside fireplace or a nice firepit outside to sit around and take in that comfortable heat with friends or family. But regardless of where you plan to start up that fire. What do you use for a fire? Wood, right?

Well, cooler weather brings in a few things that you may not see or may not like.

Cooler air brings in the need for more heat. Whether it is oil, gas, wood stove or fireplace. Sometimes higher heating bills. Everyone and everything seeking shelter from the cold.

Termites come to mind as well. To help prevent those tiny pesky little wood eaters. Prop your logs up and away from damp areas after a storm rolls on through. Helps keep them away from your freshly chopped wood!!

It's Fall!!!

9/30/2019 (Permalink)

September 23rd marks the first day of Fall! And my goodness we are excited for that. Summer weather stuck around for quite a long time. Humidity was no joke this year, am I right?

But the time has come.

When the leaves change into beautiful colors. The sunsets become a little more powerful with their shades of oranges, yellows, pinks and purples. The air becomes just a little more crisp somedays.

Welcoming in the time of the year for perfect family holidays! And cooler weather!

Enjoy the days to come but don't forget to prepare yourself for those wet rainy days that joins in with that amazing fall weather. Before you know it, winter will be knocking at your front door.

SERVPRO of Salem County will be here every step of the way!

Wet leaves cause MOLD

9/30/2019 (Permalink)

Now that summer weather is finally heading out and as excited as we all are for FALL!! It does come with a few down-(falls). When those beautiful leaves float down from the trees from the light breeze, the rainwater also comes along and soaks each and every leaf in its own way. As pretty as it is, those damp leaves can also hold onto that moisture from the rain and eventually allow the forming of mold.

Didn't think about that, huh? Water is the culprit in many cases causing different types of damages in its “waves”.

Well we are here to help you out and give you friendly reminders to help yourself before having to call on us. Do yourself a favor and make sure you take care of those leave piles as they start to form around your property.

No matter what, we all still welcome Fall with open arms!!!!

Are you checking your roof condition regularly?

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Leaky roof?

Have you checked your roof condition lately? Having a leak in your roof can cause more damage than you may know. Just one small leak can allow water and moisture into your home. Sometimes you may not even notice until it is too late. The rainwater will start to impact the structure of your home from your roof, wood framing, insulation etc. When that rainwater starts to come into your home and is not taken care of quick enough, it can cause serious damage to the structure and in most cases start to form mold.

To prevent such headaches from occurring, do regular inspections on your home roof and even in your attic. If you notice issues, try to get them resolved before they cause significant damage if they have not already.

SERVPRO of Salem County is your saving grace when it comes to any sort of fire, water or storm damage. We take the headache for you. Give us a call if you are in need of assistance and we will show you why everyone prefers to use SERVPRO of Salem County for their home needs.

Locating Pipe Leaks

Commercial Water Damage In Salem County

If you run a business in Salem County, you are probably aware of the importance of protecting your business from commercial water damage. Apart from health and hygiene factors, keeping your premises clean and well-maintained creates a positive image to customers, visitors, and staff. Additionally, it can save you money by extending the lifespan of your fittings.

At SERVPRO, we provide an extensive portfolio of commercial water damage services for Salem County business owners. Our operations can be tailored to fit the needs of your hotel or other type of business, and all our technicians are highly trained and certified by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification). We also engage a wide range of organizations (including your insurance company) to ensure a comprehensive restoration process.

A thorough leak detection process allows SERVPRO technicians to trace the location of water leaks in the building. These leaks can be visible in various places on a property but often originate from a different area that may be hidden within the structure. Once we detect the source of the water damage, we initiate a full remediation procedure to restore all affected commercial properties. The idea is to return everything back to its original state with minimal disruption to the work environment.

SERVPRO water damage experts use various specialist equipment to locate leaks from pipes hidden in structural components. Thermal imaging camera is perhaps the most commonly used tool in this part of commercial water damage restoration. It works by checking for discrepancies in surface temperatures and then shows leaking water at a certain temperature that is different from other areas of a building material.

We may conduct the initial survey using a thermal imaging camera, which is able to detect marginal differences in surface temperatures of different materials during a commercial water damage situation. These cameras are particularly handy because they are non-invasive, allowing us to undertake the survey quickly without causing a lot of disruption.

When thermal imaging is not practical for certain water damage situations, we may use specialist acoustic listening devices. For instance, the pipes can be buried too deep within the structural materials or may be very well-insulated, making it hard to identify a change in temperature at the surface. Using advanced ground microphones, our technicians can trace and locate the source of the leak within no time.

If your business has sustained commercial water damage as a result of a pipe leakage, SERVPRO of Salem County can assess the extent of the damage and provide immediate restoration services. Our tools are up to par with industry standards, allowing us to return your business to preloss conditions as quickly as possible. Call us today at (856) 339-0500.

Penns Grove Homeowners Turn to SERVPRO for Water Cleanup after Appliance Failure

7/16/2018 (Permalink)

Appliances are a welcomed convenience to your Salem County residence, but one that does not come without its share of risks. As these machines age, they become less and less able to prevent the water supply they receive from ending up on the floor around them. Often this is something as simple as a missing seal or bushing that has just worn down to nothing, but it can leave you with a substantial mess on your hands, especially if you were not at home at the time and aware of a problem. Regardless of how dire the circumstances are, professional restoration services can help you to overcome this hurdle and return your home to preloss conditions more quickly than you could alone.

No matter the appliances or the maintenance time that you put into each of them, it is impossible to rid your home entirely of the possibility of water damages. The trouble with these incidents is that they tend to leave high volumes on the floor, leading to a need for water removal services in your Salem County residence as opposed to simple mopping and drying. Our SERVPRO team can help you to overcome this overwhelming scenario and give you back your house in its original condition, usually, "Like it never even happened."

One of the first things that our professionals have to do when we arrive at your home is to determine the source of the damage and if that is something that our technicians can fix on site,  such as a small leak. Sometimes these scenarios require dedicated attention to your appliances by a repair technician, but some issues our SERVPRO professionals can handle on our own.

Extraction is a critical component to the restoration process in these situations, but often the only required tools for this process are portable sump pumps and wet-vacs with extraction wands. Drying the area follows this step and is an essential component to restoring your home.

Finding your home in need of water removal services is never an easy thing for a homeowner to face. Fortunately, this is not something that you have to handle alone. You can rely on our SERVPRO of Salem County water damage restoration technicians to help you overcome the damage and restore your home quickly. (856) 339-0500

SERVPRO Water Damage Restoration

1/9/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Salem County is the ONLY Restoration Company is Salem County, New Jersey. We take that position very serisouly and will maintain that status for as long as we can. But Why SERVPRO?

Over the past week plus with Winter Storm Greyson and the damages this storm caused with the freezing temperatures and now frozen pipes we understand each customer has a different view on how they want their property remediation to occur.

The comment we receive time after time with this storm event is, "You are completely not like the other guys and that's a great thing. The other company would have come in a flood cut the entire building which is why we do not use them anymore."

For those of you who do not know what a flood cut is it is a 2' drywall cut out from the floor up. Now while this may be the scope of work in some cases it is not for many. SERVPRO restores first then removes if it is deemed necessary. Just another reason to use the trusted restoration company.
