Little sink. A lot of damage.
2/18/2020 (Permalink)
When someone leaves the sink running, eventually the drain just won't be able to keep up. As the sink fills, it begins to slowly flow over and trickle onto the floor causing a mini flood (or a big one in this case).
All this equipment to dry all the damage from a sink overflow in an upstairs bathroom that flowed out into the hallway, down through the floors into the kitchen ceiling and light fixture, and through to the garage as well.
Our team was then called after the sink was running all night on a very stressful wet morning in their home. Upon arrival our team started right to work. Identifying all the spots that were damaged from just the one little sink. In some cases (actually, most cases) the materials that get wet, must be removed. That was what had to happen to properly dry the areas in this home.
Our team determined the flooring in the bathroom and hallway just had to be removed along with a good portion of the ceiling in the kitchen and a piece in the garage, all before drying equipment could be placed.
Most people think that just because it feels dry, it will be fine. That's not how it works. Leaving moisture in walls or on carpet can leave room for mold to grow which will create an even bigger problem the more time that goes by.
THAT is why you always call the professionals. SERVPRO of Salem County is here to help, our team is highly trained for events such as this. We will take the stress from your shoulders and handle it, so you don't have to.
If something happens, give us a call and let us do what needs to be done the right way!

After working with the new It's My World Too location in Pennsville, NJ SERVPRO offered the Emergency Ready Profile to owner Diana Karr. Diana thought it was a great opportunity and agreed to join the ERP Program!
Before the daycare opened the team here at SERVPRO of Salem County walked through the building photographing water and gas shut off valves, took pictures of all important building material, created a detailed sketch of the building, as well as made all contingency plans already put in place all accessible in one place for the team at It's My World Too.
In the event of an emergency time is money. Being able to stop a broken pipe due to knowning where the shut off valve is via the phone app can help mitigate any property damage. If a fire breaks out having all of your account numbers for each provider accessible to just click is much easier than trying to figure out passwords that were stored on your computer.
The team at SERVPRO of Salem County is helping It's My World Too "Ready for whatever happens."
If you are interested in becoming a Ready Business email SERVPRO of Salem County at ERP@SERVPROsalemcounty.com
An hour of your time to put the final steps on your contingency plan is worth it when Fire or Water Damage happens.

PUMPKINS
9/30/2019 (Permalink)
Pumpkin Fun tips;
Did you know this simple hack can help save your pumpkin from starting to form mold as it sits outside your home until Halloween?
Try these steps out:
Start by cleaning out your pumpkin with soap and water BEFORE you carve it, makes it less "gross" while you clean out those pumpkin “guts”.
Then go along scraping the insides as usual.
Apply diluted bleach to the ENTIRE pumpkin with either a spray bottle or dunking your pumpkin into the bleach/water. (1 Tbsp. bleach per 1 Quart water)
Rub petroleum jelly on ALL of the raw edges to lock in moisture.
Now place your candle or light inside, top it with the pumpkin hat and show it all off!!!
Super simple steps to add to what you probably already do as you carve your masterpiece for the holidays.
Let us know how it works out for you!!
Sometimes it's best to leave it to the professionals
9/19/2019 (Permalink)
During water damage in a home or business, no one ever fully knows the extent of the damage until they call on professionals to come out and investigate. That's where SERVPRO of Salem County comes in. We know the ins and outs of it all. We know just what to do and where to start.
For example:
As we received the call to come out to this job (pictured), all we knew was water damage occurred throughout the carpeted area. We were advised they had fans facing the affected areas at that moment and their insurance adjuster told them to have someone to come out and professionally clean the carpets. That's all. The customer expressed some concern with that and the concern for mold as well, rightfully so.
We advised the customer that we would come out and do an evaluation and come up with a game plan based on what we see.
After the customer advised us that the carpet was wet due to a "minor flood" in the home that covered multiple rooms. With the knowledge our team obtained from proper training, we know water damage. When flooding occurs, it effects not only the carpet but the carpet pads and flooring under that. If the carpet pad is saturated with water and not dried properly. The possibility of mold forming then starts.
Upon our team’s arrival, we couldn't just clean the carpets and call it a day. That's not how we do business. With the extent of this "minor flood", it did affect the carpet pad (just what we thought). We turned this "carpet cleaning" into a full job, for the benefit of this customer.
There are always more key points to factor in when it comes to any sort of damage. You can always call on us here at SERVPRO, we are Here to Help!
Why choose SERVPRO of Salem County for your carpet cleaning needs vs renting any equipment from any other company
8/12/2019 (Permalink)
There are several companies that offer rental carpet cleaners at the local grocery or home improvement store. Some of these are well known and others not as well known. The problem is that the machines use very small vacuum motors compared to the vacuum blower in a professional truck mounted unit like SERVPRO of Salem County uses. The small motors do not provide enough lift and suction to get an acceptable amount of soil and water out of the carpet. The carpet comes out stiff, crunchy and streaky.
The carpet also stays wetter and for longer. Much of the soap stays in the carpet which causes the carpet to re-soil rapidly. From a hygiene standpoint we need to analyze how these machines get used. Many times, the rental machines are used to clean apartments which are quite often dirtier than other homes. The machines are used to clean severe pet urine contamination or pet diarrhea, overflowing toilets, sewage backup and even messes involving blood.
Also, what did that rental machine pickup when used before? Could it have picked up; bedbugs, fleas, dust mites, or roach eggs that might fall out onto the next person’s carpet?
At this point I would wonder if the machine was properly cleaned and sanitized before it was rented out again. Was it just rinsed or wiped off or cleaned at all? Thinking of all these things, we would never feel comfortable bringing a rental carpet cleaning unit into my home. Are the potential savings in cost worth risking damage to my expensive carpet or putting my family’s health at risk? Additionally if you take into account the time to pick up and drop off the machine, the cleaning chemicals and your cleaning time; I think you will discover that having a professional clean your carpet will be close to the same cost and less time consuming.
At SERVPRO of Salem County, we clean and disinfect the equipment after each job to ensure we are not carrying someone else’s filth into your home. Plus, we guarantee our work.
So feel free to call around, ask some questions, get some quotes, or read the companies. But we can guarantee that we will be your best choice for a local certified professional carpet cleaner.

September is National Preparedness Month: “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how”
Local SERVPRO disaster recovery specialist offers Salem County property owners tips for preparing for, surviving, and recovering from the unexpected
Local disaster restoration specialist Craig Nunan, owner of SERVPRO® of Salem County, reminds Salem County property owners that September is National Preparedness Month. This annual event, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides families and businesses with the information and resources they need to plan for, react to, survive, and recover from an emergency, before the emergency happens. (https://www.ready.gov/september)
For National Preparedness Month 2018, themed “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how,” FEMA has prepared a week-by-week calendar of recommended actions property owners can take to be ready if disaster does strike:
Week 1. Create an emergency plan that includes signing up for emergency alerts and making contingency plans for shelter, evacuation, and family communication.
Week 2. Learn life-saving skills. CPR is a good place to start, but also be certain you know how to turn off the utilities in your home and ensure your smoke and CO detectors are properly installed and working.
Week 3. Check your insurance coverage. Once the emergency is over, appropriate and sufficient insurance will be key to getting your life back to normal, or at least on track.
Week 4. Plan financially for the possibility of a disaster. This goes beyond having a “rainy day fund” for immediate needs. Gather and organize important home, business, insurance, financial, and personal documents and keep them up-to-date and stored in a secure, water-and-fire proof location.
“There’s a difference between surviving a disaster and recovering from a disaster,” says Nunan. “Families and businesses who take the time to create both a short- and long-term plan to deal with the unexpected are better able to respond quickly if the unexpected happens, which can improve their chances of survival. Having key information at their fingertips in the aftermath of the emergency can set them on the path to recovery more quickly and with less stress.”
Because SERVPRO recognizes a fast response is critical in any emergency, Nunan reminds Salem County-area commercial and residential property owners they can download the SERVPRO READY app for free at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. The app allows users to store essential contact and property information electronically, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds, right from the scene, if disaster strikes. For local business owners who designate SERVPRO of Salem County as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of their facility, help the owner complete a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP), and store that profile in the READY app.
“SERVPRO disaster cleanup and restoration specialists are ready to respond to emergencies big and small,” said Nunan. “From SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team, a group of elite large-loss specialists, prequalified and strategically positioned throughout the United States to handle any size disaster, to local SERVPRO professionals like SERVPRO of Salem County, we specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping make it ‘Like it never even happened’ for both commercial and residential customers.”
